Day 116: A Day of Tranquility and Adventure
Today's journey began with a familiar routine, a ritual of packing up camp and preparing for the trail. Despite my efforts to streamline the process, it always takes a generous 45 minutes to an hour, a small price to pay for the adventure ahead. With the morning mosquitoes at bay, I made my way to Griffith Lake, the serene spot where I had camped the night before. The morning air was calm and peaceful, a perfect setting for reflection.
The trail started with a stroll along the lake's edge, a gentle introduction to the day's hike. This peaceful segment was soon followed by a series of mild climbs and descents, a gentle warm-up before the day's more challenging moments. The highlight of this section was the scramble up Baker Peak, a refreshing change of pace and a welcome burst of energy.
As I continued, the trail led me to a bridge over the Big Branch River, a refreshing spot to rest and cool off. I joined Birdy and Shooter, who were already taking advantage of the river's cool waters, and we shared a snack, turning it into a leisurely lunch. This peaceful spot was a highlight, a moment of tranquility amidst the adventure.
The next destination was Little Rock Pond, a tranquil haven in the heat of the day. I joined Shooter and Birdy again, this time in the pond's shallows, where we lounged and soaked in the cool water. We watched small rainbow trout and newts swim by, a delightful distraction from the hike. This unexpected detour was a welcome break, and we even discussed the possibility of camping there and calling it a day.
However, duty called, and we continued hiking, mainly uphill for several miles. We made good time and arrived at the next shelter around 5 pm. The shelter was busy, and the water source was limited, so we decided to push on a little further, following the trail to Bully Brook. Here, we found abundant water and flat tent sites, a welcome change after our recent struggles with camping at dusk or dark.
We set up camp and had dinner around a fire, a delightful way to end the day. Despite the lack of productivity in terms of miles covered, it was a fun and memorable day, a testament to the beauty of nature and the joy of hiking.
In my opinion, this day was a perfect blend of tranquility and adventure, a reminder that sometimes the journey is more important than the destination. It's these moments of peace and connection with nature that make hiking such a rewarding experience.
