Why You Should Get Your Flu Shot: Protect Yourself and Your Community (2026)

The Northern Territory's Health Minister, Steve Edgington, is urging Territorians to get their flu vaccination shots to protect themselves and their community from the potentially serious illness. This annual recommendation is especially crucial as the territory enters the Dry Season in the Top End and winter in the southern parts, a period when flu cases typically peak across Australia. Edgington emphasizes the importance of annual vaccination due to the ever-changing flu strains, stating that it's the best way to stay protected. Since the beginning of 2026, the NT has seen a rise in influenza cases, with over 531 confirmed cases, particularly in the Top End, Katherine, and East Arnhem regions. This trend is concerning, as it has led to 166 hospitalisations so far this year, compared to 5,487 cases and 1,367 hospitalisations in 2025, and 3,302 cases and 2,869 hospitalisations in 2024. Edgington highlights the vulnerability of certain groups, including children aged 6 months to under 5 years, adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people aged 6 months and over, and individuals with specific medical conditions that increase their risk of severe influenza. These high-risk groups are eligible for free influenza vaccinations under the National Immunisation Program (NIP). For those not eligible for free vaccinations, the vaccine is still accessible through GPs, health clinics, and participating pharmacies, with many workplaces also offering free flu shots to employees. Influenza is a highly contagious illness that can cause severe symptoms such as fever, tiredness, headache, chills, sore throat, loss of appetite, cough, runny nose, and sneezing. Most people can manage flu symptoms at home with rest, fluids, and over-the-counter pain relievers, but it's crucial to stay home until at least 24 hours after the fever has subsided to prevent the spread of the virus. Edgington's message is clear: getting vaccinated is the best protection against serious illness, and it's a simple yet effective way to keep ourselves and our community healthy during the flu season.
